Matthew Venner is in demand with many leading baroque and early music ensembles, as a soloist and consort singer both at home and abroad.

Notable solo concerts include Handel’s Messiah with Ex Cathedra at Birmingham Symphony Hall, Bach’s St Matthew Passion with the King’s Consort in Pamplona and Valencia; Bach’s St John Passion with the London Mozart Players at St Paul’s Cathedral; and JC Bach’s Ach, Dass is Wassers gnug hätte at Wroclaw Symphony Hall, Poland. He has also performed several world premieres including James Macmillan’s Seven Angels and Alec Roth’s A Time To Dance. 

He frequently works with, among others, John Eliot Gardiner and The Monteverdi Choir, Andrzej Kosendiak and the National Forum of Music in Wroclaw, Poland, and is a member of the internationally renowned Orlando Consort.

He is a featured artist with Hyperion Records and can be heard as a soloist on Ex Cathedra’s disc of Bach’s St Matthew Passion recorded live at Birmingham Symphony Hall as well as the Gabrieli Consort’s disc, Incarnation, for which he received excellent reviews. He regularly records as a soloist for the National Forum of Music, Poland.

He has appeared in several stage productions including Heiner Goebbel’s I went to the house but did not enter with the Hilliard Ensemble at the National Theatre, Prague; Purcell’s King Arthur with I Fagiolini at the Spitalfields Festival, London; and the incidental music to Shakespeare’s The Tempest at the Globe Theatre, London. He has performed a staged version of Duruflé’s Requiem with Ex Cathedra and dancers from the Birmingham Royal Ballet and, most recently, he performed Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice at the Royal Opera House with the Monteverdi Choir.

Future events include concerts with The Cardinall’s Musick and a European tour of with the Monteverdi Choir. He will also be performing Bach’s St John Passion at St Paul’s Cathedral, London, where he is a Vicar Choral.

Born in Romford Essex, Matthew began his singing career as a Chorister at Westminster Abbey. Having taken a Music Scholarship at Bedford School he went on to become a Choral Scholar at New College, Oxford.
